Frequently Asked
Questions
How does the nurse
help a client who has unhealthy behavior patterns and does not seem interested
in making changes toward a healthy lifestyle?
The nurse is aware that not all clients share the same beliefs about health.
The nurse uses a nonjudgmental attitude toward the client and accepts diverse
beliefs and behaviors. Unhealthy behaviors are sometimes based on lack of information
or on inaccurate information.
How can the nurse
assist the client with sexual concerns when the client's behaviors are unacceptable
to the nurse?
The nurse is aware that there are no universally accepted sexual values. Human
sexual feelings are highly individualized. The nurse respects all individuals
regardless of their sexual orientation. It is not necessary for the nurse to
suspend his/her own beliefs and attitudes but it is necessary to suspend them
in order to spare the client any judgment, directly or indirectly. The nurse
should make provision for the client to receive assistance in sexual matters
if the nurse is not able to provide that assistance.
