Frequently Asked Questions

The characteristics of quality nursing care are listed in Chapter 25. How can the quality of the "caring and compassion" and "interpersonal skills" of nurses be measured in an objective manner?

In measuring quality, three domains can be used: structure, process, and outcome. Standards for each of these domains are developed by a nursing department. For instance, an outcome standard can be based on client feedback and if clients express that they felt cared for and cared about during their stay in the hospital, this outcome standard will be met. The nurses and nursing leaders in the hospital determine what outcome clients would express if the nursing staff showed caring and compassionate behavior. Objective measurement depends on statements of the expected outcomes of caring and compassionate nursing behaviors on clients.
