Online Companion: Fundamentals of Nursing Standards and Practice 2E
Chapter 32 examines the elements of the process of oxygenation in the body (focusing on physiology -function, assessment parameters and diagnostic testing), factors that can lead to impairment of oxygenation (age, environmental/lifestyle and disease presentations) and interventions that can be used to facilitate oxygenation (O2 administration, trach care, suctioning, chest tubes) both therapeutically and those used in emergency situations (CPR and Heimlich maneuvers). The chapter uses the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome/planning, implementations, interventions and evaluation to formulate nursing care plans for the client with impaired oxygenation status. A sample care plan is provided for a client with pneumonia at the end of the chapter that provides evidence of the nursing process. The chapter also provides detailed information related to various skills (performing tracheostomy care, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy suctioning, administering oxygen, clearing an obstructed airway, and performing adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Use of complementary therapies are also addressed as well as therapeutic medical regimens providing a comprehensive format with which to both define, assess and manage a client who has impaired oxygenation.
