Online Companion: Fundamentals of Nursing Standards and Practice 2E

Chapter Summary

Chapter 34 examines the concept of mobility as an indicator of health status by looking at the coordinated effort between the Musculoskeletal and Neurological system. The importance of exercise in maintaining joint flexibility and range of motion are discussed in detail, as they are integral parts of maintaining functional ability. Health status, developmental stage, environment, attitudes, beliefs, and lifestyle are explored as to their affect on mobility and activity. The concept of immobility and its effect on overall health is explored in detail as the use of functional assessment, assistive devices and techniques facilitating transfer and ambulation that can be utilized by the nurse to improve activity and mobility. Specific attention is focused on maintaining proper body alignment, body mechanics and recognition of motion of joints is stressed in order to preserve function and prevent further injury. Recognition that the concept of mobility and activity is not limited to the clinical setting and discussion regarding the home environment and adaptations used to promote activity and mobility is addressed as part of the nursing process.

The chapter uses the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome/planning, implementations, interventions and evaluation to formulate nursing care plans for the client experiencing alterations in mobility. A sample care plan is provided for a client with a fractured leg at the end of the chapter that provides evidence of the nursing process.
